The MCube innovation project “Car-Reduced Neighborhoods for a Livable City” (aqt) brought together the Technical University of Munich (TUM), the City of Munich, Stadtwerke München, the Hans Sauer Foundation, UnternehmerTUM, and other partners to explore sustainable mobility solutions for urban neighborhoods.
We asked ourselves: How can urban mobility be designed to meet the urgent challenges of the climate crisis? What new spatial possibilities emerge when neighborhoods embrace car-reduced living? And most importantly: how can transition processes be shaped so that people become active stakeholders in redesigning public life?
My special focus was on developing tools and methods that empower residents at a local scale, helping them to imagine, negotiate, and co-create desirable futures. This meant working with diverse interests and needs while nurturing a shared commitment to how we might live together in the future — as citizens, as neighbors, and as stewards of ideas that shape tomorrow.
Bringing Change to Life – Together
Between 2021 and 2024, aqt collaborated with residents of Südliche Au and Walchenseeplatz in a real-world laboratory to research on private car use and the potential of enhancing public spaces. The project went beyond research — it was about shared experiences, attentive observation, open discussions, and collective learning.
